Project Overview
Hope For Human Society has been implementing Rain Water Harvesting initiatives in water-scarce rural areas of Uttarakhand from 2013 to 2026. With support from Swajal and other development partners, the organization facilitated the construction of more than 80 Rain Water Harvesting Tanks in the hamlets of Gram Panchayat Pasta and other nearby villages. The project aims to conserve rainwater, improve water availability, and reduce water-related challenges faced by rural communities. The initiative has provided a sustainable source of water for household needs and contributed to strengthening water security in the region. Encouraged by the positive impact of the project, several neighboring villages have also submitted proposals for similar Rain Water Harvesting interventions.
Objectives
✅ Promote rainwater conservation through sustainable and community-based water harvesting systems.
✅ Improve year-round water availability for households in water-scarce rural communities.
✅ Reduce dependence on seasonal water sources and minimize water-related hardships.
✅ Enhance water security by constructing durable and effective Rain Water Harvesting Tanks.
✅ Encourage efficient collection, storage, and utilization of rainwater resources.
✅ Strengthen climate resilience and drought preparedness in vulnerable rural areas.
✅ Improve living conditions through better access to safe and reliable water sources.
✅ Create awareness about water conservation and sustainable water management practices.
✅ Support environmentally friendly solutions for addressing rural water challenges.
✅ Develop a successful and replicable rainwater harvesting model for other villages.
Activity Description
To promote water conservation and strengthen community participation, Rain Water Harvesting Tanks were constructed through a community contribution-based approach. Under this model, beneficiary households actively participated in the implementation process by contributing a portion of the project cost. Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) beneficiaries contributed 5% of the construction cost, while beneficiaries from the General Category contributed 10%. This participatory approach enhanced community ownership, encouraged local involvement, and fostered a sense of responsibility toward the project. It also contributed to the long-term sustainability, maintenance, and effective utilization of the water harvesting structures, ensuring lasting benefits for rural communities.
Impact
The Rain Water Harvesting Project has significantly improved water availability in water-scarce rural communities. Through the construction of more than 80 Rain Water Harvesting Tanks, numerous households have gained access to a reliable source of water for domestic use throughout the year. The initiative has reduced the time and effort required, particularly for women and children, to collect water from distant sources. By promoting rainwater conservation, the project has helped reduce dependence on groundwater and encouraged sustainable water resource management practices. The beneficiary contribution model has strengthened community ownership and responsibility, ensuring better maintenance and long-term utilization of the structures. The success of the project has also inspired neighboring villages to seek similar interventions, contributing to improved water security, climate resilience, and sustainable rural development across the region.
